Week 2 - Vani Mahajanam

What are your thoughts on the projects that you have been working on?

My thoughts on the projects we've been working on so far have been very positive. This week, we worked on connecting the Bluetooth for the Tiny Watch, and our own individual projects. For connecting Bluetooth, I encountered a few issues, including the following: The tiny watch initially wasn't connecting to my phone, and it wouldn't show up as something it could connect to. This had a quick fix, which was shutting down the watch, and my phone, and this made it able to connect. For the individual project, which was the Olimex EMG heart monitor, I encountered a lot more issues, which we were able to fix in the end. These issues include: not knowing how or what to code, not knowing which baud rate was ideal, and not knowing ideal sensor placement for accurate results. We solved all of these problems by trying new things to figure out what would work best. We got help from some of the instructors, which solved our first issue of not knowing what to code, as we found instructions online. With Baud rate, we had to go through all of the possible baud rates that were provided, and we found that 2400 was ideal. For sensor placement, initially, we just followed the instructions found online, but we found that it wasn't giving accurate results, so we experimented with the placement, and found that 1 sensor on the neck instead of leg will give a visual graph of the heart rate. Once the heart rate monitor started working, I would say that it was the highlight of week 2.

What are you most looking forward to in week 3?

I am looking forward to experimenting more with our heart rate monitor, and trying to find ways to make it portable and possibly connect to Bluetooth with the tiny watch. This will probably be our main focus next week as we try to figure something out within the EMG. We initially weren't expecting anything out of the Olimex in the first place, which is why, figuring out that it could measure heart rate was a huge accomplishment, and I'm excited to see what it can do.
