Week 3 - Sophie Morita

This week we worked on our group projects. Vani and I decided on using the SHIELD EKG-EMG sensor for our project to make a heart rate monitor that doesn’t use disposable electrode pads. We decided to make a collar and bracelets to hold the sensors against the skin to take readings. We did a 3d model on OnShape first, then prototyped the part of the collar that holds the sensor with a foldable plastic. After that, we took the measurements from the prototype to model the attachment in OnShape and printed that out as well. We found that with the collar, readings can be taken even without the electrode making direct contact with the skin, though it does provide a clearer reading when it does so. After that, we modeled the bracelet, which was initially too oblong, the second print/model came out much better though both worked.

We had an issue with making enough contact for the arm electrodes, so we decided to use a conductive metal plate to create more surface area. This worked perfectly, though we only had one. While the product isn’t technically complete and is still very much a rough mock-up of what it could be, I think it went very well considering the time and resources we had. We have gotten clear readings and it’s really fun. Oh we also added a filter to the code to make it slightly easier to read.

We also made a poster for our project which was pretty fun to format. I’ve made a lot of posters in the past just like this so it wasn’t too difficult. I think presenting tomorrow will be fun. I really want to showcase our device (I really like it), so I’m looking forward to it tomorrow. Overall, this camp was pretty fun and I got to mess around with electronics that I probably wouldn’t have touched otherwise! I really liked getting to tinker and try new things.

On top of that, we got to tour the ODEC/makerspace, which I LOVED. I love it. I love all the beautifully organised nuts and bolts, the tools, all the printers, the machines too. I want a water jet. Also the printers are so NICE. I love it. The space is amazing.
